DIY of the Month: Succulent Garden

August 30, 2017

Succulents, normally found in hot, arid climates are not the first plants most people think of growing in Wisconsin, but these trendy plants are perfect for a windowsill or desktop garden. Happy with little more than a sunny window and an occasional watering, they are a great way to add some zen greenery to any indoor space.

Succulents grow best in a shallow planter with sufficient drainage. Standing water is the enemy for these plants as it can cause rot from the roots on up. Glass terrariums, jars, or small pots work great for allowing plenty of light and breathing room. Succulents tend to grow in primarily one direction, either up or out, so knowing a little about the type of plant is helpful when planning a garden.

Because these plants like dry soil, using a potting soil made for cacti or succulents will help ensure proper drainage. This can also be achieved by mixing 4 parts regular potting soil, 4 parts Perlite, and 1 part coarse sand. The soil can often make-or-break a succulent garden as regular potting soil is too dense. Layering small stones at the bottom of the planter will aid in draining water as well as add a cute, earthy feel.

It is important to make sure succulents receive enough sunlight to reach their peak color and strength. Some plant, like jade, will even change colors with the varying levels of sunlight. While there are a few exceptions, most succulents will do best with a few hours of sun per day.

With plants with names like Moonstones, Red Beauty, and Strawberry Hedgehog succulents come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some, like aloe, are well known for their plump leaves and medicinal qualities, while others, like cactuses, serve mostly aesthetic purposes. The recent popularity of succulents means they can be purchased at most greenhouses and in the garden section of many major retailers. Local residents can find a wide selection of plants at the Green Bay Saturday Farmers Market. Signature Gardens, located in booth 124, and WaterWorks Garden Supply, in booth 172 both sell succulent plants, some in decorative containers and others in temporary planters. Both booths have knowledgeable staff that can answer questions and help in designing a beautiful terrarium.
